ESL (English as a Second Language)*
ESL 1205
This is a two-credit beginner course intended to introduce basic English language skills essential for academic success. All four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be practiced in the course, with a focus on vocabulary acquisition, basic language structure and oral expression.
ESL 2205
This is a two-credit course intended for students with an intermediate level in English who will normally have completed one or more years of study in ESL before entering the course. The goal of ESL 2205 is to improve competence in all the language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis is on grammar and writing.
ESL 3205
This is a two-credit course designed for advanced students who will normally have completed several years of study in ESL before entering the course. The goal of ESL 3205 is to enhance the potential for academic success by improving formal language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis is on grammar and writing.
ESL 3206
is Transitional Literature is a two-credit course designed to introduce students to concepts in literature and prepare students for the transition to English 3201/3202. Students will have reached an advanced level in English, normally through several years of intensive study in ESL. The goal is to enhance the potential for success in English language arts courses by providing a solid foundation in the study of literature.
*ESL is not available in all schools.
